Rat repellant does its job, but it may be unsafe to your domestic animals. So you might think twice before actually using it. Also conceder all those dead rat corpses, laying around your cellar and the cleaning up you will have to perform. Also, the biggest problem with rat poison is that rats won't die instantly, and instead it will run off to a safer, unreachable place and die there. The smell will become intolerable in some time, and you will definitely need the help of professionals with special equipment to help your problem.

It does not matter where you live in the world, it is very hard to keep these common indoor bugs outside, unless you go to the extremes of keeping all your windows and doors closed at all times, which is quite impossible. I now live in Thailand and I know for certain that this is not possible.

Common Indoor Bugs

So, what on Earth can you do? Well, let's deal with all the flying bugs first, as of all the common indoor bugs, I find them the most unpleasant indoor bug. They are very annoying, buzzing around your head and mosquitoes and other flies can create irritating sores and besides that, all flies spread disease. I cannot bear to see them strutting about on food, knowing that they have probably just come off some dog's muck somewhere and now they are spitting on my food to taste it with their stinking feet!

Common Indoor Bugs

My first line of defence is fine-mesh door and widow screens. They are not expensive and can be fitted retrospectively to any window. My window meshes slide, so they will cover only one half of the window at a any one time, but I do not think that's a problem. You can still create cross-winds, by opening two or more windows at opposite sides of a room. I like to see the flies on the mesh struggling to get in by day and the mosquitoes doing the same by night. At night, it is best to turn on as little light indoors as possible so as not to draw these common indoor insects.

My second line of defense is natural predators - lizards, like Geckos (Jin Jok, in Thai). Some people don't like them in the house much either and I can't say that I'm all that keen on them indoors myself, but they are difficult to keep outside and they do consume hundreds, if not thousands, of indoor bugs every day. I particularly like to see them lying in wait on the outside of the mesh, ready to pounce on any bug trying to wriggle its way through the wires.

My third line of defense is an indoor bug zapper. You know, the electric, handheld bug zapper that looks like a toy tennis racquet. They are fantastic at catching and annihilating any flying indoor bug. The bug literally explodes and vaporizes on contact with the fully-charged wires of the indoor bug zapper. If you haven't tried using one, you really should. They are most satisfying. These three defenses keep our house pretty much free of flying insects.

The crawling common indoor bugs are less of a problem really. Door screens on springs will keep 99% of them out and the Geckos will help too. Spiders can get in fairly very easily, but then, I don't mind them too much as long as they keep out of my way, as they consume other insects too. They are on our side really. However, for those who can not bear to trap them and throw them outside, the handheld indoor bug zapper works a treat on spiders too.

Fleas can sometimes be a problem, if you keep cats or dogs, but then if you wash or dust the animal once a month, you should be able to keep these common indoor bugs under control fairly easily. However, there are two final measures that we employ. Once a week, before we go out for the day, we spray every room with fly killer and every six-months we spray any rugs or carpets with a bug killer containing permethrin, which will survive washing and vacuuming for that long without losing its ability to kill common indoor bugs on contact. If you follow these measures, you should be able to keep your home or office quite free of the most common indoor bugs and any less common indoor bug as well.

Evolution has given fleas quite a few advantages
This is what makes them so tough to get rid of. You see, the flea is a very adaptable and resilient little pests (not unlike the cockroach--ugh).

What advantages do fleas have? There are three major ones:

First of all, small as they may be, fleas have an immune system. And they will develop immunity to any kind of pesticide you use on them. It may take a few generations before this happens, but it doesn't take all that long for fleas to reproduce, so a few generations is nothing in "flea time". Second, fleas go through several stages of development, referred to as a "life cycle". During the fleas life cycle, it progresses from egg to larva to pupa, to adult flea. Trouble is, only the adult and larval fleas are susceptible to attack. Flea eggs and cocoons can live quite comfortably through a "bug bomb", or in the presence of flea collars and powders.

Third, fleas don't live just on your dog. It would be great if they did, because we'd only have to deal with our pet and we'd be done. We all understand that dogs pick up fleas outdoors, and that every time they step outside, dogs are tasty targets for fleas inhabiting the yard, woods, etc. So, we know there's danger lurking outside. But you might figure that once a flea hops on board, it'll live out its life cycle on your pet. To some extent, that's true. Initially, fleas lay their eggs on their host. But, most of the eggs don't stay there. They fall off, landing on the floor, in the carpet, and back in the yard! And we're not talking about just a few eggs. A single flea can lay 10 to 50 eggs a day, and can live as long as 100 days. That's as many as 2000 eggs in the lifetime of a single flea. Imagine the possibilities...

Here's another disturbing (and pretty disgusting) fact about fleas: when they bite, they inject a tiny amount of saliva into your dog. It acts as a blood thinner, making the blood easier to extract, but this also can be a means of spreading diseases and tapeworms. And it certainly isn't good for allergy-prone dogs, who can develop rashes and hot spots.

==========The Trouble with Traditional Methods==========

Convention has it that dogs should wear flea collars. If that doesn't work, sprinkle her with flea powder. And, of course, fumigate the house and yard. We've already discussed one problem with that approach, which is that fleas become immune to all pesticides sooner or later, so you must continually change products. But the other problem is more serious. It's the fact that all pesticides are poisons. They weaken your dog's immune system, making him an even tastier target for fleas. And they can make him sick in other ways too.

Poison is poison, no matter how you package it. (Yes the "spot-on" products are full of toxins too) And in your fight to eradicate fleas, you'll end up spreading poisons all over your yard, around your home, and --through his skin--into your dog's vital organs. Sure, no more fleas, but at what cost to everyone's health?

========So, what's a dog lover to do?===========

Fortunately, there's an answer. What most of us aren't told is that there are natural substances that fleas can't tolerate, and that are actually lethal to fleas. One of these is call "diatomaceous earth", or "DE".

DE is composed of finely milled fossilized shells of minuscule organisms called diatoms. The microscopically fine, sharp edges dry out the insects' outer shell on contact and fleas will dehydrate and die within hours.

The insects also die when they eat the dust. And it works on lots of other pests besides fleas! What's great about DE is that your dog (or cat) can eat it and it won't hurt her at all. And since it works by dehydration, fleas can't become immune to it

DE can be purchased as a powder and sprinkled on your pet and around your home. Don't leave out that most important step! Sprinkle the floors, furniture and carpeting. Sprinkle your dog's bedding and any place he likes to "hang out", since that's where the most fleas will accumulate. Be sure to get underneath
the furniture, because fleas like to hide out in dark places.

While vacuuming and washing the floors often is helpful, unless you can do it daily, it won't be enough. You should also know that fleas that get sucked into the vacuum bag can live and reproduce there, so be sure to vacuum up some DE powder too, to kill off fleas in the bag.

===========What about my dog's irritated skin?===========

All that scratching and those powders can leave a dog's skin pretty irritated. Well, Mother Nature has something for that too...

Neem seed oil is a very bitter oil with a garlic/sulfur smell and contains vitamin E and other essential amino acids. It's completely natural, and has been used as a botanical pesticide for years. When used on fleas and other pests, it impairs their development. Added bonuses are an antibacterial property, and a soothing effect on the skin.( Humans have been know to use Neem oil as an anti-arthritis and anti-wrinkle formula!)

Comb the oil through your dog's coat with a flea comb to help distribute it to both coat and skin. Now, your dog is not only free of fleas, but her skin feels better too.

Essential oils are another natural and effective way of repelling fleas. Cedar, tea tree, citronella, eucalyptus and pennyroyal, (the last two are toxic to cats) are all repulsive to fleas and can be obtained at most stores that sell herbal remedies. There are also essential oil blends containing Neem oil. Just dab a drop of the essential oil on your dog's collar, and mist it -- diluted with water-- onto her coat. Or, buy a pre-formulated spray and mist her to drive fleas away.

If your pet is already suffering from flea bites and itchy skin, herbal sprays will help soothe irritated skin. They contain aloe, which we all know is great for burns and hot spots!

b>Bathing your dog is also an effective, safe and natural way to get rid of fleas, using a neem or oatmeal based shampoo if her skin is irritated. "Bathe" her bedding too, by washing it weekly in hot soapy water. A flea comb will help you find their hiding spots.

==========What about the yard?==========

You can sprinkle DE powder here too, or apply it with a sprayer. Another option is to use "beneficial ematodes". Nematodes are microscopic soil worms that attack white grubs, fleas and crickets. They can be purchased from nurseries and similar outlets, mixed with water and sprayed on the breeding areas.

In order for the nematodes to survive, the soil must remain relatively moist and watered at least twice weekly. Beneficial nematodes do not harm plants, animals, humans or birds. Concentrate your spraying within 50 feet of where your dog "hangs out", since that's where the most fleas are found.

=========Ready to go high tech?==========

So far we've been taking the all-natural approach. But these days, there's a gadget for everything, and killing fleas is no exception. An "Electronic Flea Zapper Comb" which relies on a safe, low electric charge that is harmless to you and your pet, is reportedly "instantly deadly to fleas.

Does it work? I can't honestly tell you, but I love the idea! One of these days I'll get around to trying one!

As for the rest, these are time-honored methods for combating fleas and I can vouch for their effectiveness. Don't forget that any method you choose will work best if you start using it about a month before flea season begins. And use it continuously once you've spotted fleas on your pet. That way, you'll be sure you catch all fleas that survived as eggs and pupae, by being ready for them as they enter the vulnerable stages of their life cycle -- larval and adult fleas.

I know all of this may seem like a lot of work, but in the end, it's well worth it. Your dog will have no fleas, and will suffer no harmful side effects from collars and traditional powders. What's more worthwhile than having a happy, healthy dog who's thrilled to be alive?

The best way to prevent a bed bug infestation is to keep them from getting into your home.

Unfortunately, bed bugs are becoming a global problem, and since these little critters are fast and invasive, it can be tough to keep them out.

When you travel, bring a flashlight. Check the mattress where you're staying for any small dark stains. Look in the crevices of the mattress, and the seams. Check carefully. It is unlikely that you'll see a bug, but you may see evidence of them. They will leave dark (blood) stains when they get crushed as the previous person rolled over, or they may simply leave excrement.

Either way, they're gross.

If you see evidence of bed bugs, leave the room immediately. If you can't leave, then make sure that your luggage is placed in the bathtub or elevated off the floor. This way the insects can't climb into your suitcase and hitch a ride to your home.

Don't leave any clothing or other items on the floor where insects can hitch an easy ride to your house.

Bed Bugs Habits and Bite Evidence

I have a friend who is an exterminator. In talking with him the other day, he said that he had recently attended a symposium for exterminators. He told me, "Bed bugs are bad news. I'd take cockroaches any day over a bed bugs infestation."

This is because effective insect treatment is not just a simple application of chemical. This is going to take some careful effort on your part to eradicate them.

Bed bugs sleep during the day and come out at night to feed on blood. Humans are a favorite target, although they will also feed on dogs and cats. They are fast little creatures who can hide in a space as small as the thickness of a credit card. These insects at maturity measure about ¼ inch long.

Picture a bug about the length of a single grain of rice.

Evidence of an infestation can include bites on your person. They will typically feed in a small area, injecting an anti-coagulant substance under the skin to allow your blood to flow easily. You will generally see a small localized area of several bites on your skin to indicate the presence of these insects.

Bed Bugs Treatment Step #1

First, remove any clutter. You'll want easy access to anyplace that bugs can hide.

Bed bugs treatment starts with a vacuum cleaner with a disposable bag. You're going to vacuum everything! You need a vacuum that has a long hose and a crevice attachment.

Start by vacuuming where you've seen evidence of the critters, like the mattress seams and cracks. Pull the mattress off the box springs and vacuum them carefully as well as underneath the bed. Take apart the bed frame to remove any hiding places.

Vacuum the cracks where the carpet meets the wall, and anywhere you can see evidence of bugs. Bed bugs have been found to hide behind loose wallpaper, switchplate covers, and even behind baseboard, so you may want to remove these to vacuum behind them.

Check out furniture too, because these insects can live in sofas and chairs as easily as they can live in mattresses. You won't see many bugs, but your vacuum cleaner "offense" will suck up any eggs that may be waiting to hatch.

Once you've vacuumed every possible hiding place, take the vacuum outside and remove the bag. If you can incinerate the bag, do so. If not, place the bag inside a plastic garbage bag, tie it securely and dispose of immediately.

Bed Bugs Treatment Step #2

Rent or buy a steam cleaning machine.

The steam must get very hot, because bed bugs can withstand temperatures of up to 113 degrees. Try to get the steam at least 120 degrees.

Steam clean everything that you've just vacuumed in the previous step. Clean mattresses, box springs, sofa, chairs, furniture, carpet and baseboards. Don't miss anything!

If even one female (egg-laying) bug is missed, you could find yourself dealing with a whole new bed bug infestation.

Wash all clothing and bedding in HOT water. Warm or cool water is not enough to kill these insects. Wash coats and purses, anything that could even remotely harbor a bug. Wash rugs and blankets. Steam clean your carpet.

Bed Bugs Treatment Step #3

This is the chemical and/or pesticide step.

Chemicals can be caustic and cause health problems, so you'll want to check with your local exterminator to see what he or she would recommend.

If you have items that cannot be washed, say a computer, cell phone or other appliance, there's a product called "Nuvan Strips" that can be placed inside a plastic bag along with your item. The bag is sealed and the Nuvan Strips will fumigate the inside of the bag, killing any insects that are hiding inside the computer.

The bag and strips typically take about 3 days to do the job.

One more natural alternative to chemicals is diatomaceous earth, or DE.

Diatomaceous earth is basically the ground-up shells of tiny prehistoric creatures. These shells are very sharp to insects. When a bug walks through DE, the sharp edges will cut them, causing them to bleed to death.

DE can also be used in your garden to combat other garden insects. DE is harmless to humans.

If you choose to use DE, sprinkle it liberally around the room you've been cleaning, once the mattress and other items are dry. Make sure to get it into the crevices and cracks of your mattress and other places where you've noticed the blood/fecal matter stains.

Bed Bugs Treatment Does Not Mean You're a Poor Housekeeper

Someone with a cockroach infestation can sometimes be stigmatized as "dirty," or a bad housekeeper.

Bed bugs, though, are not discriminating. They will attack the home of someone who is a fanatical housekeeper as quickly as they will someone who tends to be more cluttered or casual about cleaning.

If you've been the victim of an infestation, take heart. This doesn't mean that you aren't a clean person. It does mean that you were in the wrong place at the wrong time, since bed bugs will hitch a ride anywhere looking for a fresh meal.

The visit may be for one of several reasons:

EHO Visit? - Don't Panic!

EHO Visit? - Don't Panic!

i) Routine inspection: this may be because it has been some time since your establishment was last inspected or it may be because your business is new

EHO Visit? - Don't Panic!

ii) Follow-up inspection: as a way of checking that problems found in a previous inspection or as a result of a complaint from a member of the public or staff have been corrected or are in the process of being corrected.

iii) EHOs will sometimes visit a food establishment for other reasons such as carrying out surveys or providing advice as part of a wider project

These are the main tips to remember when you are asked to make an appointment with an EHO:

1. Don't panic! Firstly checklist the most basic requirements:

1.1 Washrooms are fully equipped and clean

1.2 Ensure all food handlers have the correct clothing including head gear. There must be some spare protective clothing for staff as well as visitors including the EHO him/herself.

1.3 Clean all surfaces including in cupboards and fridges/freezers

1.4 Make sure you have sufficient air-tight containers for holding and separating left over food

1.5 Ensure that fly killers, rat traps and other pest control measures are fully functional and ready

1.6 Ensure there is adequate space and facilities to enable proper separation of cooked and raw food

1.7 Ensure all cooking utensils not in use are clean

1.8 Ensure there are spare clean cloths ready for use

1.9 Check all food handler's qualifications Make sure this information is up do date and easily accessible

1.10 Make sure that no food is on the floor or on a floor-level pallet.

2. Temperature Control

2.1 Make sure you have a temperature probe thermometer and ideally a surface thermometer. You may be expected to take the temperature of food at various points in the cycle such as at the point of delivery, whilst in refrigerated storage, or prior to preparation or despatch.

2.2. You may need to keep records of temperatures. If you have not kept such records previously do not be tempted to fabricate historical records. EHOs are generally very good at spotting this kind of thing and all you will do is lose their trust. The best thing to do is start the records from today and tell the EHO the truth, if asked, that you only started the records because of the impending visit. Even if you are prosecuted, an EHO would be pleased to reflect such honesty to a court and this may reduce the severity of any punishment.

2.3 Make sure you have the maintenance record of all fridges to hand. If you cannot find any, contact an engineer and have them serviced. You should be able to arrange an express service if this is required

3. Pest Control

3.1 Ensure that any pest control contracts are up to date. Appraise yourself of the last pest controller visit date and the contents of the report. Ensure that all points from the report are actioned.

3.2 Ensure there is proper insect screening on any open windows or doorways

3.3 Check when you (or the pest controller) last changed the UV lamps in your fly killer machine. If this was done more than 12 months ago ensure, place an urgent order for more. Most companies that sell fly killers will provide an overnight delivery surface of new lamps and for that matter replacement fly killers.

3.4 Ensure that fly killers are fitted with shatterproof lamps if you are preparing open food. Also ensure that the fly killers are not directly above food

3.5 Look for any evidence of rodent infestation. If any is found and the traps are functioning, call the pest control company. Most will come out at short notice

4. Housekeeping

4.1 Check your orders of cleaning supplies such as anti-bacterial hand-wash. The last thing you need is to run out of any such products when the EHO visits

4.2 There must be a cleaning schedule and some form of inspection, as well as records to show that the cleaning and inspections were carried out

4.3 Ensure that cleaning chemicals are all labelled. If any labels have come off, either apply your own label if you can identify what it is, or dispose of the chemical responsibly. Ensure that cleaning tools, cloths and chemicals are away from food and also ensure that cloths used for food preparation surfaces are not mixed with cloths and mops used for the floor

4.4 Ensure that all food is labelled and has a use-by date where appropriate. It is vital that at least one person on site knows the history of all food o the premises. If the EHO finds a full container in the fridge labelled 'mayo' with no other information and nobody can tell him or her how long it has been there or how it got to be there, then this will be a black mark against your establishment

4.5 Make sure bins are emptied before that become full and that waste awaiting collection in the yard is properly covered

5. Staff/Training

5.1 You must have an up to date record of all staff training/certificates. This must be laid out clearly and be easily accessible. Once again, if you have just decided to start these records do not fabricate historical entries. Apart from the fact that this action would most likely be unlawful if it was intended to be viewed by an EHO, it would most likely be spotted by the EHO and you would lose their trust. The EHO would not be impressed that you had only just started to keep records but they would be outraged if you had fabricated them. You are advised to treat the EHO with respect at all times.

5.2 Relying on training records is only part of the story. Even if all of your food handling staff and ancillary staff such as cleaners have all been trained in food handling and all have the correct paperwork it is still your job as the boss to ensure that they are carrying out their duties correctly. Time may be short before an EHO visit, but you must ensure that each member of staff is fully aware of what is required in order to comply with food handling requirements. There is nothing worse than showing an EHO a complete set of training records while a member of staff can be seen placing raw meat above cooked meat in the fridge.

5.3 You must be firm on this. If any member of staff does not come up to the grade you will need to ensure that they received intense training or counselling and even formal disciplinary action. This must also be recorded. In this case, if the EHO has spotted this particular member of staff doing something that will compromise food safety you will have some defence if you can show records of the action you have already taken to deal with it.

5.4 You must ensure that you staff are free of any illness or infections that could compromise food safety. You need to ensure that a record of such diseases is kept (confidentially in the employee's record) and, if necessary they are relieved of food handling duties or even sent home. Once again you must not make up any historical records.

5.5 Hand-washing, head-covering, clean uniforms and dirty cloths are all extremely important. EHOs will be looking out for regular hand washing between tasks and will want to ensure that cloths are regularly sterilised or disposed of rather than being reused. Head covering/hair containment is vital for food handlers (well for those that have hair!) as this is very visible and obvious. A dirty uniform is also an obvious and highly visible problem.

5.6 At least one member of staff (more than one if you have many staff) will need to be qualified to train others in food handling

6. Things that you cannot correct before the visit

6.1 Do you have interior window ledges that do not slope? Make a note of it

6.2 Are there some cracks in tiles and in some walls and floors? Are there cracks in the sink? Make a detailed note of these problems

6.3 Do some doors or windows not close properly? Make a note

6.4 A few of your staff have not been fully trained in food handling? Give them other duties for now (away from food). If this is not practical provide some in-house training for now and ensure you record the training that you gave them and when it was carried out.

As long as you have these problems in hand and they are on your 'to do' list, you will minimise the likelihood of the EHO inspection going bad for you. If you have made a date with the building contractor to have the window ledges sloped, cracked repaired, tiles replaced, doors mended and have booked up training sessions for your staff, you can hopefully satisfy the EHO that you are on the case.

As I said, don't panic. Also, do not lie or falsify records. Work through this list. Ensure your staff are fully briefed on all the issues and the importance of a good EHO inspection. The EHO does not expect a flawless inspection. In fact, if they observe pristine conditions and utter perfection that may be a little suspicious. What they want to see is the basics done well such as hair covered and hands washed, records kept and a list of those issues that have still to be in the process of being dealt with, even if this is just a 'to do' list.

An EHO visit can give you some commercial advantage. Apart from the obvious one of not appearing in court for some misdemeanour there is the fact that you will be left alone to get on with running your business. In some jurisdictions, where a 'scores-on-doors' system operates, a successful EHO inspection may bring in more business.
